How to Get the Best Blowout!

So this is that time of the year when there is low humidity, more indoor activities, and an overall jolly time to look good. The holidays are the perfect time to put a little extra energy into a sleek blowout. A lot of my clients tend to say to me, "Ro, this is why I come to you because I can't do this at home!" Even though it may seem impossible to duplicate the shiny and bouncy blowout that you get in the salon, I'm here to tell you that it's all about sectioning, tension, drying the hair completely, and PRACTICE. These are a few of my tips and products that I like to use to get the best blowout every time:

Start with freshly shampooed hair. Of course you want to use the appropriate shampoo for your hair type, but one of my favorites is CHI Infra Moisture Therapy shampoo. It gently cleanses your hair and leaves the hair more manageable, healthy, and with superior shine. Also, it is sulfate and paraben free, so it is safe to use on color-treated hair. I follow this shampoo with the CHI Infra Thermal Protective Treatment. It strengthens and adds moisture, in addition to, protecting the hair against heat damage. It also is great to use on all hair types.

Next, I like to add a product on damp hair that helps control frizz and add shine. My favorites for this step are either Macademia Natural Oil or CHI Silk Infusion. Both of these oils are very lightweight and can be used on all hair types. If you tend to have more dry hair, this would be a good time to add in a leave-in conditioner such as CHI Keratin Mist. If you tend to have more flat and limp hair, add a thickening spray such as CHI Volume Booster.

Thirdly, blow dry your hair with a concentrator or nozzle attachment. Dryers that have 1800 watts or higher tend to dry the hair much faster. Once your hair is about 70% dry, separate the hair into smaller sections. Always start your blowout in the front, then the sides, and lastly, the back. Use a Denman, paddle, or round brush, along with tension, to help to you dry the hair completely. If your hair is even slightly damp, it will frizz and won’t hold your style.

If I really want to give my client the infamous "Kim Kardashian" or "Victoria Secret" look, then I will set the dried hair with Velcro rollers or a 2" curling iron and pins. I usually do an allover spritz of hairspray such as CHI Iron Guard 44 Style & Stay Firm Hold Protecting Spray and let the hair cool for 10 minutes. If my client is natural and looking for a straighter and more polished look, at this time I would take small sections and flat-iron the hair using Mizani Thermasmooth Shine Extend Anti-Humidity Spritz. This adds high shine and resists humidity.

Lastly, finish the style with a dime-sized drop of Macademia oil for added shine. If you have set the hair, undo the rollers or curls, turn your head upside down and lightly spray with hairspray. Run your fingers through and you are good to go!

The more you do regular blowouts, you will naturally become more skilled at the technique and find out what works best for your hair. You know the old saying, Practice makes perfect!
